Disabled Veterans Sportsman Access

Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, local and state agencies have worked to ensure that disabled individuals—especially veterans—can fully enjoy Oregon’s outdoor opportunities. From discounted fishing licenses and free boat launch access to extended camping benefits and special access permits, these programs help eliminate barriers and make the outdoors more accessible. Some disabled veterans may be excited to discover waived fees, reduced rates, and priority accommodations across parks and waterways. Check out the resources below for more information.

Disabled Veteran License Program Disabled Veteran Parks Pass

Veterans in Washington, especially around the Spokane area, who enjoy fishing, hunting, and boating have access to a variety of benefits tailored to their outdoor interests. The Washington Department of Veterans Affairs and local veteran service organizations assist veterans in applying for both federal and state-level benefits, many of which include discounted access to recreational activities. Service-connected disabled veterans—those with a 30% or greater VA disability rating (or any rating if age 65 or older)—can obtain an annual combination fishing license for just $12.89. This license includes freshwater, saltwater, shellfish/seaweed harvesting, and vehicle access. That’s a steep discount from the standard $74.37 rate for other residents. Non-resident disabled veterans also receive discounted rates, paying $74.37 rather than the full non-resident price of $170.

Spokane-area organizations and nonprofits frequently host veteran-focused outdoor events such as fishing derbies, guided hunts, and boating trips, offering veterans a chance to connect and enjoy the outdoors together. In addition, there are specialized programs that provide adaptive equipment and gear, helping ensure all veterans—regardless of ability—can participate in outdoor recreation fully and safely. These programs are designed not only to honor veterans’ service, but to promote healing, mental health, and a strong sense of community.

Washington also offers a Lifetime Disabled Veteran Pass for state parks, which grants free access to camping, boat launches, moorage, and day-use parking at Washington State Parks. (Note: This pass does not replace the Discover Pass required for Department of Fish & Wildlife or Department of Natural Resources lands.) If you’re a disabled veteran in the Spokane area, check your eligibility and take advantage of these excellent benefits to enjoy Washington’s great outdoors without financial barriers.
